Courtesy call on His Excellency Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. SA Vigneswaran.

His Excellency Mr. Md Golam Sarwar, High Commissioner for the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to Malaysia, paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. SA Vigneswaran.

This year, marks the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Malaysia. The High Commissioner reiterated that Malaysia was the first country from the Southeast Asia region to recognise Bangladesh upon the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries on 31st January 1972.

Meanwhile, during the meeting, His Excellency Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. SA Vigneswaran stressed on the importance to further strengthen the economic and trade cooperation between both countries. He also agreed that as we celebrate the golden jubilee of Malaysia-Bangladesh bilateral relationship, it is high time we change the way we look at Bangladesh. Malaysia needs to see Bangladesh beyond mere source country for foreign workers.

Furthermore, the deliberations were also pertaining to several initial proposals that focus on trade and investment. The High Commissioner highlighted that Bangladesh is embarking to create 100 economic zones to attract foreign investment into the country. And the High Commissioner had asked the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to India and South Asia to assist the High Commission to attract Malaysian companies to establish their operations in the identified economic zones.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. SA Vigneswaran also suggested that creating a halal hub in Bangladesh with Malaysian companies participating should be a top priority for both countries.

Both of them also expressed their concerns on the issue of trafficking for labours and the use of forced labour.

Also present were Mr. Mohammad Khorshed A Khastagir, Deputy High Commissioner and
Mr. Md. Rajibul Ahsan, Counsellor (Commercial).
