Tan Sri Dato’ Sri SA Vigneswaran thanked the government for allowing the celebrations to still go ahead with tight SOP despite the request or demands by certain quarters such as the President of MAP, P. Waythamoorthy who wanted the celebration to be rethought and the President of Malaysia Hindu Sangam, Dato Mohan Shan whom wanted a tighter SOP and suggested to consider cancelling the celebration if necessary. It has to be taken into account that last year Thaipusam celebration was not allowed but this year even though we have Omicron around, we still received the approval for Thaipusam prayers with tight SOP.
We are also aware that Thaipusam is a religious festival celebrated by hundreds of thousands of devotees nationwide and implementing such a tight SOP for the festival but not for other commercial places or gathering has cause some unrest amongst the Indian community. Despite tight surveillance, devotees have adhered to the SOP but were still unhappy for the double standard treatment. The thundering speech delivered by Datuk Seri M. Saravanan drove the thoughts and emotions of the community to the attention of the government and authority.
Both the leaders have touched two different matters that raised out of the same issue and it is irresponsible for certain quarters to raise comment or discuss the issue without looking through the facts fully and with intent to cause division between the leaders.
