The past week or so, it appears that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been raring to seek power again. It has been reported that Dr Mahathir has called for Pakatan Harapan to reject any Bills put forth by the government, unless he gets his way, by seeing his motion of no confidence being voted on in Parliament.
In essence, Dr Mahathir is threatening and holding the entire country at ransom, since he deems it more important to be in power than having necessary Bills for the people, to be passed, including Bills that may be essential to address the Covid-19 crisis, such as any future need for further amendments to the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 or its regulations thereof.
Does Pakatan Harapan really think this is the best time to sabotage the government?
For clarification, the motion of no confidence was not rejected. It was merely adjourned because of the pandemic that is plaguing not just the country, but the entire world. In addition, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had also given a detailed explanation on the appointment of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the 8th Prime Minister of Malaysia.
Putting politics aside, this is the worst time for Pakatan Harapan to be obsessed over power.
First and foremost, Pakatan Harapan has not even settled the internal strife between its leaders. It is obvious that Dr Mahathir and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim are not on the same page. How could they lead the country if they could not even lead their own party?
For example, a recent audio clip on Pakatan Harapan’s presidential council meeting which took place on February 21 was leaked. The audio clip, in a nutshell, reveals the power struggle between Dr Mahathir and Datuk Seri Anwar, on Prime Minister’s position, prior to Pakatan Harapan’s embarrassing fall from grace; thanks to its own doing.
When they were questioned about the leaked audio clip, their responses even contradicted each other. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed the authenticity of the audio clip while Dr Mahathir insisted on it being doctored.
In fact, it is puzzling how Dr Mahathir is acting as if he is still the leader of Pakatan Harapan when he was commanding the Opposition to reject all Bills when Datuk Seri Anwar on the other hand, was reported to have confirmed being the Opposition leader now.
Secondly, if hypothetically, Pakatan Harapan ever gets back to power, who would become the Prime Minister? Even if there was a general election, are they planning to go about with the same charade again, where they would tell their own members and the rakyat that Dr Mahathir is going to be the interim Prime Minister without a timeline before Datuk Seri Anwar takes over?
This was the question that tore Pakatan Harapan asunder, and one that they still could not resolve until today. The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) Youth urges Pakatan Harapan to focus on getting their house in order before they even speak about the welfare of the country. Malaysia certainly does not need to go through another series of drama between Dr Mahathir and Datuk Seri Anwar, let alone a sabotage on the administration of the government, during such a crucial period.
